Grew up on the water
I grew up where the tide sets the day. Summers were outdoor showers and a long way around; winters were empty lots and the good kind of quiet. I could tell you the tide by the smell of the flats.
Moved away
Like a lot of people from a small coast, I left. School, work, a place with more than one road in and out. You don't stop being from somewhere, though. You still check the weather back home from three states away.
Why pins and water
Every place here has its water: a sound, a pond, a harbor, a cut. The pin says this is the place. The water line says this is why. They're made to collect, like park patches, one for every coast that's yours.
